Why Study Anthropology?
At McMaster University, our Anthropology program allows students to explore a variety of courses that provide an understanding about how we are all shaped by the cultural, social, political and historical contexts in which we live.
About First Year
Students entering into the Faculty of Social Sciences in their first year take a general program, Social Sciences I. This allows students to explore various options and experience a wide range of courses. At the end of the first year, students can then choose to major in an Anthropology program.
I was able to work directly with professors and their labs to learn the ins and outs of research, while getting my own hands-on experience. This took my learning outside of the classroom and encouraged me to consider the different types of careers I could pursue following my degree.
SOCSCI 2EL0 was really important for me to learn how to translate my knowledge, skills, and experience as a student/new grad into the language being spoken by prospective employers.

Combined Honours in Anthropology and Another Subject (BA)
- Completion of any Level I program with a Grade Point Average of at least 5.0 including a grade of at least C in one of ANTHROP 1AA3 or 1AB3. Satisfaction of admission requirements for the Honours program in the other B.A. subject.
Honours Anthropology (BA)
- Completion of any Level I program with a Grade Point Average of at least 5.0 including a grade of at least C in one of ANTHROP 1AA3 or 1AB3
Anthropology (BA)
- Completion of any Level 1 program with a Grade Point Average of at least 3.5 (C-) and an average of at least 4.0 (C-) in HLTHAGE 1AA3 or 1ZZ3 and 1BB3

Academic Advising
The Academic Advising office is run through the Office of the Associate Dean. The primary goal of the Advising Office is to provide all Social Sciences undergraduate students with the information and guidance they need to succeed in their academic careers.
Advisors can help you make the right academic decisions by explaining policies and regulations as well as presenting different options and supports available in your studies.
